The
Middle School reading program is a bridge between the elementary Reading
program and the English program taught in grades 9-12. Each grade emphasizes
vocabulary development, reading comprehension, critical reading/thinking
skills, and writing as related to reading and application of all reading
skills through narrative, informational, persuasive/argumentative and everyday
text types. Grade level differences will be noted by the degree of difficulty
of the materials, the degree of emphasis on the objectives, the level of
sophistication of the materials and the age-appropriate themes for the development
of the students as life-long, mature readers. A literature text and a variety
of approved novels and contemporary articles are used to develop and reinforce
the program objectives.

The sixth grade reading course
is designed to be a transitional program from the elementary program.
Reading comprehension skills are emphasized in a literature format and
literary skills are introduced. Students relate the literature to the
6th grade life skills themes. Vocabulary in context, study skills, writing,
communication and application of all reading skills provide a balanced
format. |
|
A literature text and a variety
of novels and contemporary articles are used to develop and reinforce
the program objectives. The seventh grade reading program enables students
to apply and further develop their reading comprehension skills through
the study of both literacy aspects of reading and related interdisciplinary
connections. The students analyze in depth examples of classic and contemporary
literature through reading, writing and discussing. Extra emphasis is
placed on inferential thinking skills along with the continuation of developing
vocabulary, study skills, written and oral communication skills and application
of all reading skills.

The eighth grade program is
designed to continue the refinement of the essential reading skills and
the critical analysis of contemporary and classic literature. Higher order
thinking and interpretative skills are stressed. Students are expected
to apply the critical reading skills through the four text types and show
competence in communicating the skills in written and oral fashion. The
objective of the completion of the Middle School reading program is to
extend student knowledge, understanding and independence to become a competent,
critical reader for life.
