WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Heavy rains moved the fifth annual Birches Elementary School Lemonade Stand fundraiser inside to the gymnasium, but it didn’t take any of the spirit or fun out of the event. Benefiting the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and led by the school’s second-grade classrooms, the Birches stand sold 535 cups of lemonade and raised $1,003.33. The Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has a mission to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily for research into new treatments and cures, and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.
Each of the Birches second-grade classrooms took turns at running the stand. Split into groups, the students worked stations including greeting classes at the door, pouring lemonade, taking monetary donations, tallying the amount of lemonade sold, and working the lemon-signing station as other grade levels came in one-by-one to enjoy a treat.
Students and staff had the opportunity to enjoy a cup of lemonade by making a donation of their choice. After students made a donation, they were escorted to the lemon-signing table, where they penned their name on giant grade-level lemons that will be displayed in the school’s second-grade hallway, near their lemon tree. Once they were done drinking the lemonade, there were a few stations of games they could play, like a lemon bag toss and scooter races.
