Singer/Songwriter Rick Charette Brings Positive, Soothing Sounds to Grenloch Terrace Early Childhood Center
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Renowned singer/songwriter Rick Charette made a special visit to Grenloch Terrace Early Childhood Center on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, to perform his upbeat songs to the school’s kindergarten students. Charette comes annually to the school, but there were some special guests for this visit – the kindergarten students from Whitman Elementary School.
With the District moving to full-day kindergarten in 2016-17, several kindergarten students attend class at Whitman. So those students were invited to take part in GTECC’s Charette assembly, which doubled as the school’s introduction into the Olweus Anti-Bullying Program.
Charette sang all his favorite songs to the GTECC and Whitman students. He even allowed the early arrivals to help him pick out his shirt for the performance. GTECC Principal Wendy Crawford had a big role, too: she joined Charette and played backup on her guitar.
The students joined in to sing all the songs, including “I Love Mud,” “Alligator in the Elevator,” “Going Through the Car Wash,” “First Time on a Zipline,” “The Vegetarian Barbecue Moose” and more. Students and staff acted out the words in songs with body sways and hand motions, as well. Charette even sang a song he wrote specifically for Washington Township and its anti-bullying program. “No More Bullying Me” was one of the hit songs of the day.
Between numbers, GTECC guidance counselor Lauren Krupa took the microphone to introduce Olweus – and its Township Tuesday class meetings, which are twice per month – to the students. She also went over the four main rules of Olweus at the kindergarten level: 1. We will be good friends; 2. We will try to help students who need friends; 3. We will try to include students who are left out; 4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult.
