WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Washington Township Board of Education approved Eric Ring to lead the Washington Township High School varsity wrestling program at its public session on Tuesday, May 23, 2017. The 2001 Washington Township graduate replaces Ron Ippolite, who resigned in March after seven years at the helm of the Minutemen.
“Our Board of Education has made a wonderful decision to name Eric Ring as our new head wrestling coach,” WTHS Director of Athletics Kevin Murphy said. “Eric Ring is a man of great character. He will continue the proud tradition of Minuteman Wrestling. I look forward to working alongside coach Ring as he develops student-athletes into young adults, providing a positive interscholastic athletic experience.”
Ring is a 2001 graduate of WTHS and was a standout on the mats for the Minutemen. He was a four-year letterwinner and a three-year team captain. He won three District 30 championships and two Region 8 titles. Ring placed fourth in the state tournament in 2000 and third as a senior in 2001. He finished with a career record of 107-15. Ring wrestling collegiately at Edinboro University, earning four varsity letters. He was a 2006 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion, a two-time Eastern Wrestling League runner-up, and a two-time NCAA Division I National Qualifier. He was top 16 at the 2006 NCAA Division I Championships.
From 2006-11, Ring worked as a graduate assistant wrestling coach at Drexel University, planning and running daily practices and working closely in all facets of recruiting. In 2012, he joined Ippolite’s staff at WTHS, where he assisted the head coach in all facets of the program. He was a liaison between the high school team and the township parks and recreation program. Ring was awarded the 2016 District 30 and Region 8 Assistant Coach of the Year award. He also is the co-founder and head coach for the Patriot Wrestling Club, which provides training and group sessions for athletes ages 5 to 25.
“Eric was a state place winner at WTHS, a national qualifier at Edinboro University, a collegiate coach at Drexel University and for the past five years a valued assistant coach at WTHS,” Murphy said. “His experiences will continue to benefit our student-athletes both on and off the mat.”
Ring is a second-grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, where he also is an advisor for the Friendship Club for at-risk boys in third through fifth grade.
