WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Washington Township Public School District hosted “Parents’ Cyber Night II: Preparing the Children of the Future” on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Orchard Valley Middle School. The event was open to all parents from the District’s three middle schools – Orchard Valley, Bunker Hill and Chestnut Ridge – and more than 115 parents attended virtually by streaming the sessions from their homes.
“Parents’ Cyber Night II: Preparing the Children of the Future” was the District’s 12th Parents’ Dinner Workshop since 2011. The Parents’ Dinner Workshop series is an ongoing initiative designed to provide parents with academic resources and strategies to better assist their children at home.
According to Mrs. Raani Agrawal, the District’s Response to Intervention Coordinator and English Language Arts Interventionist, “The mission of the Parents’ Night Dinner Workshop series is to bring families, schools and communities together by focusing on the common goal of improving students’ academic achievement. The idea is to partner with parents by exposing them to a variety of interesting, interactive and informative workshops in which they can learn more about 21st Century Education, and ways to help their children.
“This Parents’ Night Dinner Workshop was extra special because it offered a cyber component to accommodate the needs of busy parents who were not able to attend in person,” added Agrawal, who has coordinated each of the District’s Middle Level Parents’ Dinner Workshops.
“Parents’ Cyber Night II: Preparing the Children of the Future” featured live streaming through YouTube and allowed parents to ask the presenters questions in real time using the Poll Everywhere software application. All parents with access to the internet were able to attend from home by logging in through the link on the District homepage.
Wednesday’s Parent’s Dinner Workshop featured presentations by three middle school teachers: Mr. Joseph Downey, Ms. Megan Delany, and Ms. Deanna Doyon.
- Mr. Downey is the English Language Arts Interventionist at Bunker Hill and Chestnut Ridge Middle Schools for grades six through eight. He presented “21st Century Learning Strategies and Apps to Support Middle School Students.”
- Ms. Delany is the Math Interventionist at Bunker Hill and Chestnut Ridge middle schools for grades six through eight. She presented “Stress Free School Year: Mindfulness Strategies for Home and School.”
