WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Chestnut Ridge Middle School held its first World Language Night in honor of National Foreign Language Week on Wednesday evening, March 8, 2017. Organized by German teacher Kayla Berry with assistance from Spanish teacher Clarissa Morin-Mojica, more than 100 tickets were sold to the event, which previously had been held earlier in the school year and just deemed a Family Night. Staff, students and parents from both CRMS and Bunker Hill Middle School were in attendance.
The event included food tastings catered by Philadelphia restaurants Brauhaus Schmitz (German) and Las Cazuelas (Mexican), as well as hand-made crepes (French). “The students seemed to like that part the best,” Berry said.
World Language Night included the showing of the movie "Around the World in 80 Days.” In addition, students in the World Language classes at CRMS made tri-fold posters about various countries around the world, which lined the cafeteria. The posters had fun facts, current events, geography, food and entertainers related to those countries.
As part of the celebration, CRMS students represented the different languages on Tuesday (Spanish), Wednesday (French) and Thursday (German) by wearing flag colors, playing authentic music during the students’ transitions between bells and by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in that language each morning. Kathleen Rodriguez led the pledge in Spanish, Anthony Davenport in French and Cam Lyons and Sabrina Sims in German.
