The Interact Club’s leadership went to a conference recently and learned that Rotary International is a huge supporter of the Josh the Otter program. Josh the Baby Otter is a book written by Blake Collingsworth to help children comprehend and remember this important message: To stay away from water unless accompanied by an adult. Collingsworth’s son, Joshua, drowned in a backyard pool when he was just 2½ years old, and the family has since created the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation in his honor, committed to solving the problem of drowning.
At the conference, WTHS Interact learned that many schools conduct an assembly for younger school-age children based on the Josh the Otter program.
“We got very excited about wanting to do it at Township and bring this program to life,” Interact co-advisor April Renzetti said. “When we spoke with Rotary about the possibility of having them purchase the books for each child, they informed us they already supply the books to the kindergartners in the District. With that, we decided to bring the show to life and create an assembly.”
The Interact Executive Board will narrate and act out the book, with decorations and music filling the IBPAC. There is even expected to be a visit from an costumed otter to add to the event.
“Since we didn’t need to figure a way to pay for the books, and we only needed to pay for the transportation of getting the kids to the IBPAC, we were thrilled,” Renzetti said.
When the kindergarten students leave the assembly, each child will get a paperback copy of Josh the Baby Otter, a CD and a coloring book, all provided by Rotary.
