“I have a vested interest in what goes on in this school and this school district,” Leone said after posing for photos in the high school’s Core lobby. “I’m proud to live in a community where the township and the school district work together to do what’s best for our students.”
New Washington Township Mayor Joanne Gattinelli and new Police Chief Pat Gurcsik made the joint decision to return to two SROs at WTHS. While the school district and the municipality split the cost of the first SRO, the township will pick up the full cost of adding Leone.
“The mayor and I want residents to know we’re committed to working with (Superintendent of Schools) Mr. (Joe) Bollendorf in protecting our kids. This is money well spent,” Gurcsik said. “Officer Leone has spent years engaging with our youth and creating a positive police/community relationship. He’s a perfect fit.”
Added Gattinelli: “I saw a need because of the size of the school and the amount of children in these halls every day. Officer Leone is familiar with the building, and we think the students will benefit by having another police presence in the school.”
“We are very grateful for this level of commitment by our local police and local government, and we welcome this opportunity with open arms,” Bollendorf said.
Leone’s first day back at WTHS was February 1st. He worked there Wednesday and Thursday, and he will be at the school full-time starting on Monday, February 6th.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Tony Leone is quite familiar with Washington Township High School. The Washington Township police officer has two children – Brendan, a freshman, and Rebekah, a junior – at the school, and he served as a School Resource Officer (SRO) in the building from 2003-10. On Friday, February 3rd, it was formally announced that Leone is rejoining Tom DiTullio as a second SRO within the halls of WTHS. He couldn’t be happier.
