WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – If you walk through Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in the spring, one thing you can’t miss is the colorful cutout paper shoes that line the school’s hallways. On Thursday morning, February 26th, students were educated on what those shoes mean – and why there can never be enough – as they attended an assembly held by representatives from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
The JDRF’s Dana Gold and Valerie Laranko led a 20-minute presentation that talked about what diabetes is, who can have it, and how they live with it. They discussed both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and they even showed a video featuring young children living with the condition.
At the end of the program, the school learned it will be taking part in a JDRF Walk on May 8, 2015. Prior to the walk, they are tasked with raising as much money as they can for the cause. Each student will receive 10 paper shoes that they will have contributors sign, as long as they donate at least $1. And if the school can raise a minimum of $2,800 for JDRF, TJ Principal Gary Breen and Nurse Cindy Johnson will greet them one day at the end of the school year from the TJ roof.
