WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – It was a spread fit for the celebration, and the sixth- and seventh-grade Spanish students at Bunker Hill Middle School made the most of it. To celebrate the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo, the BHMS students enjoyed a celebration in the school cafeteria, complete with a Mexican feast and some impressive dancing on Friday, May 5, 2017.
The celebration was organized by teachers Frank Cabrera, Clarissa Marin-Mojica and Belinda Murray. Buoyed by a donation from the BHMS PTO, food was provided by renowned Philadelphia Mexican restaurant Las Cazuelas and owner Alfredo Aguilar. Students paid just $5 and received chicken empanadas, taquitos, beans and rice, tortilla chips, guacamole and more. A beautiful cake was provided by Sam’s Club.
Prior the meal, students were entertained by a group of their peers, who took to the stage for a rendition of the “Mexican Hat Dance.” After seeing the girls in action, a few daring male students joined them on stage for an attempt at the dance.
Cinco de Mayo honors an unlikely Mexican victory over the French forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. And while Mexicans only celebrate with vigor in Puebla, it has become a kind of Mexican Heritage Day in the United States.
