Rules for Formatting Books

 

To locate the citation information for books, use the title page of the book

Citations for books may include

Author or editors name (last name, first name)

For example:  Austen, Jane

 

Title of the Book in italics
For example:  Persuasion

 

edition

number of volume

 

Publication information:  city of publication:  publisher, year
If there are several cities, choose the first city
For the publication year, choose the most recent

For example:  Toronto:  Bantam Books, 1999.

 

Medium.

For example:  Print

 

 

Rules for Formatting Periodicals

(newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals)

 

Citations for periodicals may include the following:

Author or authors
For example:  Carchidi, Deborah.

 

Title and subtitles of the article in quotation marks

For example: "Machiavelli:  Prince of Princes."

 

 Name of the periodical in italics, volume and issue number (for scholarly journals)

For example:  Time.

 

 date or year of publication, page numbers and medium

For example:  25 Sept. 2009:  25.

 

Medium

For example:  Print.
